Freshmen misconceptions

It’s hard for some to comprehend the disproportionate amount of dislike the freshman garner. From “Go home freshmen” to blanket statements, the assault seems never ending.

“We understand that you don’t like us very much but we’re also here showing our school spirit, so don’t marginalize us as much,” freshman Emily Nyquist said.

For others, it makes total sense that they’re picked on the most.

“I completely understand the treatment of the freshmen because of the behaviors and attitudes shown, and also that it gets passed down from each class. Last year’s freshman class heard the same chants we have and as they move up, they enjoy not being the target of the chant,” said Connor Fitzgerald, a freshman who plays center field for the baseball team.

We all have our own opinions about the graduating class of 2021, however some of the freshmen want to clear the air about some common misconceptions.

Upperclassmen misconception: The freshman class is awful.

Freshman reality: ”Not all of us are awful. There are a lot of people and a majority of our grade you know those who vape, do stupids things at football games or whatever. There’s other people and other grades that do that too but there are definitely people in our grade,” Nyquist said.

Upperclassmen Misconception: All freshmen are disrespectful and rude.

Freshman reality: “I’ve heard that all of the freshmen are disrespectful which is not true. There are definitely the ones that give a bad name to us, but there are also those that work to make it up,” Fitzgerald said.

Upperclassmen misconception: The freshmen are treated poorly and deserve it.

Freshman reality: “I think we are treated the way we are because it is our first year in high school and everyone else has been there longer than us so we don’t know as much about how the school runs. Also freshmen have been treated like this for so long that it’s normal to treat them like this,” freshman Hope Bennor said.

While the attacks on the freshmen won’t end until they go up a grade, the class wants one thing to be known for certain, it’s not just the freshmen who are bad.

“It’s high school everybody kind of messes around, everybody’s going to do stupid stuff,” Nyquist said. “There is a large part of freshmen doing it but there’s also a lot of sophomores and juniors doing it to.”
