On May 5, The Roar attended the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) spring awards ceremony. Due to COVID-19, the ceremony was live streamed on YouTube.

All in all, MIPA received 4,319 entries from high schools around the state. The Roar won 16 awards, ranging from honorable mention to first place.

The Roar’s editor-in-chief senior, Mary Holohan, submitted the article “Northview students attend Climate Strike” and was awarded honorable mention.

Fellow senior Andrew Dykstra also received honorable mention for his article “Roar reviews: WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?.”

Sophomore Victoria Scovel submitted her interactive graphics titled “Super Bowl and sex trafficking” and received an honorable mention.

Junior Doretta Schat-Beimers placed third out of 29 submissions for her news story “You’ve got mail…somewhere else.”

Junior Ava Ohlman’s “More than metal straws” was also among the winners, receiving a second place prize.

Sophomore Sydney Butts took home awards for her two news briefs. “The truth about the booths” won second place and “There’s a new deputy in town” won honorable mention.

Sophomore Emma De Mey received three awards. For her photograph featured in “Staff spotlight: Sandy Goward,” De Mey placed second. She also received honorable mentions for both “Stopping traffic” and “2019 Spooky Sprint photo gallery.”

Senior co-editor Jordyn Young also was among those honored. Her news articles “The aftermath of snowpocalypse 2019,” “The winter that never ended” and “Facing the vax” were all awarded with honorable mentions. Young’s also won second place for “Governor Gretchen’s gas” and third place for “Governor Whitmer weighs in on vaping epidemic.”

The last award that The Roar was given was also its highest. Sophomore co-editor Olivia Austin was honored with first place out of thirteen submissions for her photo story “Homecoming game 2019 photo gallery.”

“I am so beyond proud,” Holohan said about winning so many awards. “These awards are a representation of the hard work every single staff writer puts into The Roar. It makes me elated that professionals recognized the hard work all of our members put into The Roar.”
