To be blunt…

I hate weed. There I said it. I think it’s gross and smells bad and I can’t stand people who worship it. But with it becoming legal in Michigan, I guess I’ll just have to put up with it now, though I feel that I shouldn’t have to.

When you look at it, weed overall is not the greatest, from its previously mentioned smell to the fact that if it really is medicinal then why on earth must you ruin your lungs to use it? There are so-called “edibles” and even then their potency is unnecessary.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t care what you do in your own house, but the fact that people will most definitely smoke/eat weed in public makes me wary of the whole thing.

People argue that weed isn’t bad for you or it doesn’t harm others, but it does. I know people whose entire lives were ruined because of weed; friends, and acquaintances who used it and ended up on the street or in rehab for heroin. Weed is a gateway drug. It’s horrendous for your lungs if you smoke it, and overall it’s a danger to the lives of the innocent.

The hazard it poses to others is clear, people can drive high, work high or even do both at the same time. Weed is an inhibitor, it alters the mind so that it doesn’t react as fast. This is the ultimate hazard for driving or operating heavy machinery. The impact it has on the brain is the same reason that it’s illegal to drink and drive.

Weed is an addictive drug, that when not reigned in can cause countless problems both because of its mind-altering effects and its habit-forming natures. It ruins lives and can destroy careers.

Even though it was just made legal, there is nothing stopping businesses from firing/disciplining users of the drug, as it is their legal right.

If a parent of a young child loses their job because of their choices and is unable to get another job, that child could possibly suffer due to a choice they aren’t in charge of.

Overall, weed is not something that I want in my community. I worry that people will not use weed safely and that it will start to be something I see in public.

  1. I believe your article should be taken down for being unprofessional. Using your own personal opinion should not be tolerated since you haven’t used any data to support it. You came out and said anybody who uses weed will get addicted to heroin where the data simply isn’t there. This could be so much better if you took more that 3 minutes to write it out and didn’t supplement facts with your own opinions. Do some research then republish.

    • There are many incorrect things in this article and I agree with James. I think this should be republished.

    • I disagree with the article, but just because there isn’t research doesn’t mean that his points are invalid. This is supposed to be an opinion piece, not just a bunch of statistics.

    • Wrong. He is right as there is data to support the fact that Marijuana is a gateway drug to other more harmful substances as stated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-gateway-drug). So yes, there is data to support that marijuana is a gateway drug to more harmful substances such as heroin. The author never stated that will automatically turn you into a heroin addict, but he did state that it is a gateway drug to other drugs which is a statistic that is backed up by credible studies.

    • May I draw the reader’s attention to the fact that this article is categorized under the opinion section of the roar. Therefore your point that this should be taken down due to the fact it’s based on opinion is invalid.

  2. there are many things that are incorrect. Weed is a gateway drug if and only if you allow it to be. I have never heard of anyone dying from smoking weed or it ruining their entire life. The plant has been around for thousands of years and has many uses. Your opinion may be biased due to the fact that you have probably never smoked or used any substance of marijuana. Most people use it to relieve them of stress or pains in their body or other things like seizures or other medical problems. Peoples lives have been saved by use of marijuana. for example a young girl named charolette figi in colorado was treated for a rare version of epilepsy with the use of marijuana. there are plenty of people with similar problems that may need to be treated but dont have access to something that might actually help the problems theyre having. marijuana isnt only just a plant either. It has canniboidals which are the main chemicals in marijuana. The main two being THC and CBD. The THC is the canniboidal that gives you the feeling of being high or hungry. and the CBD is the canniboidal that relieves stress, anxiety, depression, pains, and many other things. It also doesnt inhibit you from doing anything. I know plenty of people that go to work high or go to school high or drive high and i would say they drive better and do stuff better than anyone i know. The death rate of marijuana is said to be zero but in cases that it is claimed to cause hallucinations or other problems it is usually laced with other drugs that cause these problems. alcohol is a real problem. people kill people when theyre drunk, either from rage, driving, or other problems. this is because it actually effects your vision and ability to operate things. so before you post something with a biased opinion do a little background research instead of focusing on how you feel.

    • Thank you for using logical arguments to back up your side instead of just hating on Sean because you think his opinion is wrong. If we are talking about representing our school, then the best way is to show that we are professional and mature enough to argue respectfully without becoming crybabies because the person on the other side didn’t back up their claim with evidence.

    • You sir are incorrect. Weed is a gateway drug due to the nature of the fact your brain gets used to the dopamine high caused by weed, causing your brain wanting to need that high leading to more harmful and intense drugs. Yes, it is a choice in the nature to use weed or not, but if you use it frequently you’ll eventually get used to the dopamine high. For reference, https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-gateway-drug. You are also incorrect by saying weed makes you do things better which is just plain wrong. Car crash rates have been shown to be statistically higher, direct correlation to weed legalization.

  3. Opinion means opinion. In America we have freedom of speech. Unless you are a communist or a anti-freedom finatic, you should not be asking to remove people’s voice because you disagree with it. The same thing happened to Reddit, where the very Liberal CEO Steve Huffman began to remove the comments of and ban conservative voices. He was then sued many times, and now his company is going downhill. Read more about the Reddit Scandal here. https://www.wired.co.uk/article/reddit-edit-post

  4. The lack of scientifically correct information is concerning. I understand that this is an opinion piece, however it’s important to be scientifically accurate when it comes to these issues. That being said, Do some research and educate yourself before making assumptions. As a writer of the NV roar you are representing Northview and it’s students. There is a responsibility with that you obviously do not realize based on this article

    • Does that mean you are saying only certain views should represent Northview? WHich ones are those. I am sure there will be many who disagree with your answer.

      • Absolutely not, that is not what I’m saying. However jumping the gun and making wild and crazy assumptions without having any evidence to back it up is unprofessional and immature.

  5. Stating “marijuana is an addictive drug” isn’t a fair statement when there aren’t any real sources of it being addictive. Medicinal marijuana is used for a wide range of reasons one of the biggest reasons being epileptic seizures. Edibles and smoking marijuana aren’t the only ways to use it. CBD is the medicinal part of the plant while THC is the part that gives someone the feeling of “being high.” CBD capsules are used for muscle pains/spasms, migranes, seizures, etc., There’s a wide variety when it comes to what marijuana really is. So stating any opinion negative or positive about the topic is invalid without any real substance or sources. There’s no facts behind any opinion here, I understand you do not have to agree with anyone about the law being passed, but it specifically states “no public use is prohibited” so your fear of it being publicized and used everywhere is an irrational. I feel this should be removed and once you do more research about some pros and cons of marijuana being legal to use before writing something so opinionated with the first sentence being “I hate weed.”

  6. When it comes to a topic such as this one scientific data and evidence needs to recognized. I understand this is an opinion You are representing northview and northview students as member of the northview roar, a responsibility that you do not seem to understand. That being said, educate yourself. Do your research, because no matter what your opinion is, you cannot argue with scientific facts.

  7. Although this article is labeled as an opinion, with any opinionated argument, you should have a counterclaim to show that you viewed the other side of the argument. When there is no counterclaim, the argument seems unresearched. Not only does this article not have a counterclaim, but it also throws in the subject of heroin. Heroin and weed are two very different things and although it can be addictive, they both have different effects and outcomes.

  8. This was so terrible. Think about the people you made feel awful by writing this. The people who do it to get away from sadness and the people who do it so they aren’t in pain so they can be in a better mood. And you are here criticizing them for what? Your own satisfaction? I’m so tired of people putting other people down because it’s there choice what they want to do and at the end of the day it’s not your place to judge them or what makes them feel better. It’s not your place to try and tell them they are wrong either. This should be taken down ASAP.

  9. Although this article is labeled as an opinion, with any opinionated article there should be a counterclaim viewing the other sides of the opinion. Without a counterclaim, argumentitive articles like these, look ignorant and unresearched. You should have facts to back up your opinion.

  10. I do disagree with the article, and there isn’t a lot of research to support it. Yes, it’s an opinion piece, but because it doesn’t have research to support the claims in it, I don’t take it very seriously.
To respond to some things in the article, anything can be addictive. Anything can build up so much of a habit that you almost can’t stop. I do agree that people won’t use it safely, though. I get maybe using it every once in a while, because that’s not really harmful (or as harmful) but people that use it are definitely going to abuse it and smoke it once a day or multiple times a day, which it does have some unwanted effects if you do it that regularly. What people should be doing if they do smoke weed is do it maybe once a month, once every few months, maybe once a year, or not at all.

  11. I agree with some things in this article, and strongly oppose opinions in other aspects. I respect that this is an opinionated article, and I am not suggesting that the arguments are necessarily “wrong.” However, in the future, using a moderate amount of statistics or facts to support an opinion would make the article seem much more valid

  12. I am glad that you disagree with the point this article is making, I don’t agree either, but their lack of evidence doesn’t negate their right to have an opinion, only the validity of their argument. Another thing, when you say that they are representing Northview, what do you mean. Are you saying only certain opinions should represent our school? At Northview we should be proud of our disagreements because they are what make us smarter. It is better to learn from others mistakes then from your own. Yes, they should back up their opinion with evidence, but that is no reason to remove their voice. Freedom is freedom no matter how based in fact what you believe in is. If somebody posted an article about the Islamic faith in the opinion section would you be crying for it to be torn down for its lack of evidence? Faith is belief. Seeing is not always believing. The amount of evidence that you bring to an argument doesn’t make your opinion wrong, it only makes it more difficult to convince somebody else. IF YOU THINK THAT THIS PERSON IS WRONG AND THAT THERE SHOULD BE EVIDENCE BACKING THEIR CLAIM THEN MAYBE POST A COMMENT WITH YOUR OWN POINT OF VIEW AND SOME LOGICAL EVIDENCE AND STATISTICS instead of asking that their article be taken down.

  13. I agree with some things in this article, and strongly oppose opinions in other aspects. I respect that this is an opinionated article, and I am not suggesting that the arguments are necessarily “wrong.” However, in the future, using a moderate amount of statistics or facts to support an opinion would make the article seem much more valid.

  15. I agree that more statistics would be very wise and could help as a writer, but again this in no way negates Seans right to voice his opinion as outrageous and unadvised as it is. If you don’t like how his opinion represents Northview then I guess you’ll just have to leave Northview because this is a school where everyone gets a chance to publish their opinion. So it’s not Sean’s fault if you don’t want to be associated with his opinion. Again agreed, from a writing aspect yes, he should have used more data to back up his claim, but from a representation standpoint, we should not be condemning others because we don’t think their opinion lines up with how you think people should see our school. If you disagree with his opinion feel free to post a comment backing up your side and proving how he is wrong with statistics and evidence.

  16. The unprofessionalism and bias in this article is honestly, disheartening. Not only do you ignore the fact that it’s a remnant of healing, you also say nothing about how it helps with anxiety, and even depression. This article is clearly spoken out of the posterior, do some research, hit a blunt, and then speak. So many wrong things, so little time.

  17. OH NO HIS OPINION IS BIASED!!!!! HOW DARE HE HAVE A BIASED OPINION!!! I’d like to let you know that everyone’s opinion is biased, even you saying that the article seems unprofessional is an opinion and THAT is biased. THe definition of bias is “prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group” and the definition of opinion is “a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.” (NOT BASED ON NECESSARILY BASED ON FACT OR KNOWLEDGE) Notice how similar those are? that’s because they are supposed to be. Thank you for posting the FUNNIEST THINg I’VE READ ALL DAY. I laughed for a 20 minutes straight after reading this imagine someone’s OPINION being BIASED. 🙂 how dare it be so!

  18. Give Sean a break ok? I feel like at this point, many people are simply commenting on here just to have something to talk about, not thinking who’s expense that comes at. This article may not be the most professional, as the previous 26 (seriously guys?) comments have pointed out, but his opinion is still very valid. Try to look past this article and don’t hate on Sean. Whatever you may think of his opinion, he is a strong writer. This was simply an off-article.

    • Ok, offending somebody doesn’t matter. If Sean is wrong, then he is wrong. You can’t not argue a point for fear out of offending somebody who doesn’t agree. I feel bad for Sean, but you cannot post an opinion article and not be open to disagreement. Anything you write that is controversial can be disagreed with. This part of freedom of speech. If there is somebody arguing against Sean’s part, as long as they aren’t attacking him personally, then they are free to tear this article apart.

      • I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say that no one should be arguing with this or refraining from voicing their comments. All I was saying was to remember to be kind
I by no means intended to imply the refrain of our right to the freedom of speech, just to not abuse that power.
        Apologies.

  19. Hey guys just remember this is an opinion. We should not feel the need to destory somebody based off of their opinion. To me that is unethical and completely ridiculous. Sean is a good guy who doesn’t like weed. So what? Yelling at him over the comments isn’t going to change anything. Just remember to be kind please, we are all people and we all break in different ways.

  20. i feel attacked. This article seems so judgy and made to make peeps mad. Also i donut understand what the smell has to do with anything. I am stuck smelling freshman, but you don’t see me typing up an article about that. You lads should publish an article telling freshman to shower. You pissed people and i find it entertaining. Good Job.

  21. I thought this was a great article. As an adult my I can see it from many points of view. As this is an opinion piece, I can appreciate that you may have taken an unpopular stance but were clear in your beliefs. When people start demanding that opinions are removed, its starts to get into dangerous territory. At some point, their opinion may not be the favorable one and their speech will be limited. Regardless of where anyone stands on the issue, I appreciate you are able to speak your piece.
