Follow up: Hurricane brings classroom together

It has been six months since 13 million people’s lives were affected by hurricane Harvey, a natural disaster which inflicted $75 billion worth of damage in Texas alone.

In October, math teacher Sarah Snyder sent over 100 pounds of school supplies to help a Texas teacher in need. While there were complications with the shipment of the packages, Kristel Sortelli at Ross Sterling High School ultimately received the supplies.

“We are excited to have everything,” Sortelli told Snyder. While the supplies may not appear to be much, they helped out Sortelli’s students. If not for Snyder they wouldn’t have any supplies to get them through the school year.

It is going to be a long road to recovery for schools in Texas. Ross Sterling High School experienced water damage throughout the 52 year old building.

Students and faculty organized fundraisers to raise money to fix areas of the school that needed it most, like the gym and classrooms. The school will be restored by the beginning of the next school year.

“I’m proud of the recovery of our school and city,” Sortelli said.
