Northview responds to Parkland shooting by Maddie Miller

The society my generation is growing up in is different than what our grandparents experienced. Yes, we are fortunate to witness many groundbreaking inventions and have seemingly unlimited opportunities in life.

Until that life is taken away. Until one day, we walk out the door of our home to attend school and never make it back.

Unfortunately for us, this seemingly overdramatic and irrational fear is actually just the opposite. This is our reality.

The students and teachers who were shot in the Parkland shooting did not leave their homes and their families one Wednesday morning and expect for it to be their last, but for 17 it was.

Those lives lost at Parkland all had plans for their futures and now their families have to make plans for their funerals.

We are a country that is supposed to mourn together and solve problems together. While some of our country continues to debate the typical topics, our generation is left feeling affected in unprecedented ways.

One of our own staff writers here at the Roar wrote an opinion piece on this topic and privately requested that theirs not get published. They expressed fear of being a possible target if there were ever a similar situation here at Northview.

The magnitude of that private request should be overwhelming.

A teenager walking the halls of Northview High School is afraid to speak from their heart and mind for fear of their own safety.

This society my generation is growing up in is different. Our grandparents feared the possibility of war and trauma from foreign lands. We fear the possibility of war and trauma from inside our school walls.

  1. Personally, I think we should have a walkout (or at least a day of silence) to protest the lack of gun control.
