Take your parent to school day

Have you ever accidentally called your teacher Mom? That’s an embarrassing moment that many of us can relate to, whether it was in 2nd grade or last week.

For a few students at Northview, calling a faculty member ‘Mom’ or ‘Dad’ is familiar, because they’re actually their parent.

Senior Mitchell Haveman has the privilege of having both parents in the building.

“It’s cool having my parents with me and it never really has affected my independence,” Haveman said.

Many teenagers wouldn’t be so optimistic about spending their high school days with their parents, however Haveman sees it as a family experience.

But there are times when things can get difficult for students with faculty member parents, and the same goes for the parents.

Often times students in the hall make comments about their teachers, both positive and negative. This can take a toll on the children of the staff members

Haveman chooses to take the comments with a grain of salt and separate school and family, just as his parents do.

“It really doesn’t make me feel any different if people say how they feel about my parents. Although most of the time it’s a good thing,”  Haveman said.

Faculty members in this situation also take the good, with the bad in stride. SRC Coordinator Nicole Mulheisen also has both of her children in the building with her.

“I love Northview and the teachers and community are great! So having both of my boys in the school is awesome, even if they don’t always enjoy it as much as I do,” Mulheisen said.
