“I hate when I’m wearing something and then a week later I see someone else and they’ve got it,” senior Malik Bricker said.
Experiences like this inspired Bricker to join fellow senior Jalonni Love in creating their own brand, 5Hundredclub.
“We always talked about starting a brand,” Bricker said. “Then we put it together and actually did it instead of just procrastinating and talking about it.”
When starting 5Hundredclub, Love wanted to show kids that if they take initiative they can do whatever they set their mind to.
And make their own money.
“We were trying to be a positive influence and then it just kept growing,” Love said.
When it comes to designing their clothes, Love and Bricker said they get inspiration from “high end runways, streetwear and art.” They try to take what they see in everyday life and turn it into fashion.
“I’m not going to try to be like Christian Dior, but I’m going to take their inspiration and make it mine,” Bricker said.
Some of their clothes have hand sewn aspects while others have a printed design. When they have an idea for a printed design, they create a graphic online. Next they send it to be printed on t-shirts and hoodies by Northview graduate Mitch Haveman.
Clothes can be bought on their website that is managed by the co-founders and modeled by a variety of people.
“I pick people that correlate with the style and the image that I want to go along with the brand,” Bricker said.
As time goes on the two hope that 5Hundredclub will continue to grow. Love and Bricker don’t know how much longer they will run the brand, but for the time being the seniors enjoy designing and selling their clothes.
“I just want to see my ideas and creations being worn,” Bricker said.
