A person doesn’t have to be born into the Northview community to follow the motto of “We are Northview.” Guidance counselor Dion Charity’s leadership stems from his upbringing.
In Charity’s high school career he attended three different schools: GR Central, Wichita North, and Wyoming Kelloggsville. Even though he didn’t attend Northview high school, he draws a personal connection. So when he hears the mantra, “We are Northview,” he immediately thinks of the Northview community.
“[There is a] support system no matter the situation. Good or bad,” Charity said.
Charity strives to encourage the student body and lends a few words of advice: Bring effort and never give up, or you will only bring excuses.
This has been a motto Charity has lived by his entire life. Whether playing sports or dealing with personal struggles, he pushes forward.
Charity wasn’t dealt the best of hands. He grew up without a father, but feels truly blessed with the outcome of his life.
“I do believe that there are some beautiful things in this world that we just take for granted, Charity said. “Life can be very simple but we make it difficult.”
Charity feels a sense of pride within the Northview community. He also sees potential for growth that would have an increasingly positive impact on the community into the future.
“We need to work on the freshman straight from the get go. I think kids are going to be kids and people grow at different levels from 8th to 10th grade. Putting something in place that establishes school pride, work expectations, I think it would help very much for the lower classmen,” Charity said.
In his first year as a school counselor Charity feels that he can voice his opinions on such subjects in a more constructive manner. He doesn’t comment on these issues to offend one class in particular but rather to set a foundation to improve Northview as a whole.
