As the Girls Varsity basketball season wrapped up, Junior Grace Becker ended confidently with a bang.
Becker was first introduced to basketball in third grade through the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and has shown continuous involvement throughout her basketball career.
“I love being part of the team and improving throughout the season,” Becker said. “Basketball has taught me that when you want something, you have to work for it.”
More recently, Becker broke the Girls Varsity basketball three point record for a season and was named first all conference.
The last record was set in 1992 with 30 three point shots made in a season. On February 25, Becker broke the record against East Grand Rapids making 31 three point shots. At the end of the season, Becker finished with 34 three pointers.
“Myself and the entire coaching staff are extremely proud of Grace for beating the school record,” Varsity coach Jeff Hoyh said. “It couldn’t [have] happened to a more humble, hard working player who works hard every day in practice, which shows on the court [and] on game days.”
Becker not only works hard to continue to prove herself what she is capable of, but also challenges the drive and motivation for the team to show great leadership.
“Personally, I think Grace is extremely deserving of this accomplishment,” Teammate Junior Avery Boucher said. “At the beginning of the year she didn’t get the proper recognition but she proved herself and achieved beating the school record.”
As this year has come to an end, Becker is excited for the year ahead of her.
“I am excited to see what next year brings,” Becker said. “Personally, my goal is to beat the record I set this year and as a team. I hope we win more than this year.”
With the lessons she has learned and the title she holds, she has high hopes for the younger generations.
“Always play to the best of your ability and give it your all,” Becker said. “You won’t lose anything by trying your hardest, even if the outcome isn’t what you wanted.”
