Winning 100 total wrestling matches in a high school career is like finishing the Boston Marathon.
You train and train and train until your body can’t give anymore.
For senior Trent Rector, his wrestling journey began in sixth grade.
“I really struggled my first two years into this sport. I didn’t even win a match my first year,” Rector said.
In the eighth grade, Rector found the spark to motivate himself to succeed on and off of the wrestling mat.
“I trained the entire summer and was truly preparing for my high school experience,” Rector said.
Ninth grade was a whole other intensity level for the young star.
“I had a lot of butterflies going into each match. That came from putting the pressure on myself and wanting to succeed,” Rector said.
However, the following two years brought heartache for Rector.
“I struggled with injuries my sophomore year and lost in the blood rounds [overtime] of regionals my junior year,” Rector said.
Rector used that last match as motivation for the success he has had his senior year.
“This year has been my best by far. I’ve lost only few times to some tough competitors,” Rector said. “My ultimate goal of the season is to place at state and leave a mark in Northview history.”
Through blood, sweat, and tears, Rector has received an opportunity of a lifetime.
“I will be attending Adrian College to pursue my wrestling career. My main goal is to major in electrical engineering,” Rector said.
Rector is not afraid of hard work, on or off the mat. His commitment to excellence will only set up him for success in the future
