Sophomore Will Pollack has joined the varsity golf team in full swing. Pollack is considered the lowest scorer on the team, receiving many mentions and honors. Pollack earned an honorable recognition for his play at the state tournament his freshmen year. He also finished top ten in his league earning an OK White all-conference athlete award.
Golf is not new to Pollack, he’s been playing on the courses of Grand Rapids for ten years. Pollack’s best score he has shot is a 68 on 18 holes. An average person shoots around 90 to 100 on 18 holes.
Pollack’s hard work and dedication toward golf helped begin his journey on the varsity golf team. Head coach David Tull saw the potential Pollack had as a young golfer.
“[Pollack] entered high school with a lot of experience in playing summer tournament golf,” Tull said. “As a result, I didn’t hesitate having him try out for varsity.”
Pollack brings hard work and dedication to the team.
“I practice during the summer about a couple hours a day, and during the spring [I practice] for about two or three hours,” Pollack said.
Pollack’s golf seems to be on an upward trajectory.
“He leads by example with his scoring, and challenges others to get better,” Tull said.“Last year, as a freshman, he finished in the top ten in the league, [which] helped the team advance to the state tournament, a first in the program, and [Pollack] received honorable mention recognition for his play at the state tournament.”
Pollack is a great player through scores, but he also brings a passionate personality that is crucial for being part of a team.
“[Pollack has] talent and a desire to compete. [He] has great hand-eye coordination, is mentally tough and possesses a great short game,” Tull said. “He never backs down to a challenge.”
Senior and Olivet commit Gavin Denyes has been a teammate on the varsity golf team for three years. Denyes sees Pollack as supportive and talented.
“Will is a competitive teammate that always wants to push you to keep doing your best every time,” Denyes said. “Will brings composure, and of course, he’s really good at golf.”
Pollack is leaving a legacy for many more golfers at the high school to see. He wants people to know to keep trying and work hard.
“It takes a long time to get good, so never give up,” Pollack said.
