Making money as a teenager can be extremely difficult. Most teens have no time for a job, for it clashes with sports schedules and school work. Most jobs have an age minimum of 16, and most kids 16 and under need transportation to and from their job. Despite these challenges, there are easier and quicker ways to earn money. Everyone experiences either needing or wanting money. Read below for some simple ways to make the bread of which you’ve been daydreaming.
Bob Nowak is the social studies economics teacher at the high school and recalls how as a teenager he made more money, starting with getting a job.
“I worked at a restaurant in Eastown, “ Nowak said. “I was like a busboy and dishwasher, and sometimes I’d help the hosts.”
Before Nowak had his first official job, he found cash opportunities through family and friends.
“I would (as a teenager) do odd jobs, like if my parents needed specific work done, I would sometimes try and get them to pay me for that,” Nowak said. “I remember doing work for some of my friend’s dads, like a side business where he sold toothbrushes to dentists offices. He would pay us to move all the boxes and stuff.”
Nowak used specific techniques in his youth in order to not spend all his earnings.
“I was always pretty good about saving money, like when I was a teenager my pay was about half and half, my paycheck and my tips,” Nowak said. “I would just keep my tips as my mess around money and then put my paychecks into the bank.”
Nowak gives all teenagers an overall goal to strive for when saving money.
“Stuff adds up easily, so you gotta decide what you’re spending money on, I see plenty of kids every day with an energy drink or a Starbucks drink, but if you’re trying to save money you gotta find ways to cut your spending more than anything else,” Nowak said. “So if that’s like you get paid tips and you put the money right into the bank, or maybe even like putting cash in your sock drawer or something.”
Sophomore Kaelynn Puff shares her techniques on how she makes her money as a jobless teen. Even with the yearn for a big-time job, Puff uses her resources around home to earn the money she wants.
“I don’t have a consistent job, but I do a lot of work around the house for an allowance,” Puff said. “Sometimes I’ll babysit or dog sit if I have time, but usually I use my family’s chore chart, where each chore is worth a certain amount of money, so you can just do them and get the money at the end of the week.”
Puff’s family has saving techniques set up, so she can still have her spending money.
“I have a three-way system, so I have a savings account, then a spending amount and then I have an account that goes towards the profit for my church,” Puff said. “It’s like a communion type of thing so it’s nice.”
Puff also uses relationships and connections in her neighborhood to discover simple jobs she undertakes in the name of raising funds.
“I live in a small and close neighborhood with my mom, where there are many dogs I can walk and kids I can babysit,” Puff said.
Multiple opportunities await around Puff’s neighborhood, where people are desperate for help on the home front.
“My mom has brought up Facebook Marketplace where you can post yourself and put yourself out there for babysitting or dog sitting.”
Tommy Tindall, a personal finance writer for NerdWallet, wrote an article titled, 27 Ways to Make Money Online, Offline and at Home in 2025. Tindall offers atypical ways to make money online.
“[ You can] Make money online through websites such as Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer. These sites offer opportunities to do a variety of freelance jobs, such as writing, programming, design and marketing,” Tindall said.
Tindall suggests new and simple ideas that are flexible enough to work around sports and school.
“Love dogs? Choose dog walking as a beginners’ way to make money,” Tindall said. “Apps like Wag and Rover offer on-demand dog walking, so you can pick up walks when your schedule allows.”
