DIY mask tutorial

On April 24, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that she was extending the Stay Safe, Stay Home order until May 15. As of April 26, this order also requires that people wear a mask when they are in enclosed public spaces. While no one will be punished for not wearing a mask,  stores can refuse service to people if they aren’t wearing one.

Below is a tutorial on how to make an easy, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) approved mask in just a few steps.

Supplies Needed:

Two 10 inch by 6 inch pieces of cotton fabric (old sheets or t-shirts works)

Sewing machine or needle and thread

Two 7 inch pieces of â…› of an inch wide elastic

Iron

1. Put the two pieces together, pattern side out.

2. Fold the long sides of the fabric over  ¼ of an inch.

3. Iron the fold down to make it easier to sew.

4. Sew both of the folds down.

5. Fold the shorter sides over ½ an inch and repeat steps three and four.

6. Cut two 7 inch pieces of elastic. You may need to adjust this length if it feels too tight or too loose.

7. Push the elastic through the ½ inch fold. If you’re struggling you can use a bobby pin to thread the elastic through.

8. Tie the elastic in a knot and repeat step seven for the other side of the mask.

9. Try your mask on and make sure that elastic fits comfortably over your ears.
