“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.” This is one of the most famous lines from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the play attendees of the trip were fortunate to hear it delivered live at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

The annual Chicago trip, which is sponsored by the English Department and organized by Advanced Placement Literature teacher Megan Porter, took place on Tuesday, March 4th. The students left at six in the morning and returned to the high school at 7:30 at night. While on the trip, they went to see a Shakespeare play at Navy Pier. They then got back on the bus and went to the shopping district in Chicago. There, the students had free range to go grab a bite to eat or go shopping. The Chicago trip had 80 seats available and was completely sold out, each seat costing $75.00.

Porter has been running the trip for almost four years. Along with providing this experience for 80 students, Porter’s favorite part is getting lunch with the other chaperones after they watch the play.

“Apart from the plays, which I love, the teacher chaperones that I have been going with, we all go out to lunch afterward, and that is probably my favorite part,” Porter said.

This trip is an informative and exciting experience for high school students. French exchange student Lucio Pizzo was very eager to go on the Chicago trip this year to experience what a big city in America has to offer.

“I am excited about the play because I like Shakespeare, and I never have seen one in real life,” Pizzo said.“Also, the shopping time we have is pretty fun because we don’t have teachers with us.”

Senior Lena Specter went on the Chicago trip her sophomore year and signed up again this year due to her fond memories and the exceptional play and independent nature of the trip.

“I really enjoyed it,” Spector said. “I remember seeing Romeo and Juliet, and the performance was both on the stage and in the audience, which is cool, and then I think the aspect of having an unchaperoned but also semi-chaperoned visit to Chicago that is both freeing as well as still feeling safe.”

The Chicago trip has been going on for decades, and it is a fun, affordable, and memorable experience. To keep the tradition going, sign up next year for this once-in-a-lifetime experience with your friends that you will remember forever.
