A Friday full of celebration and pep sets the tone for a wonderful homecoming weekend, but behind it all are busy student council members running around conjuring the perfect week for Northview students.

Student council members spent weeks on the details surrounding the homecoming assembly. From decorations to exciting games, student council thought of it all. Organizer Julie Haveman was the ringleader, securing important details during the stress filled week as well as checking all of the boxes down to the smallest factors. The council met every Tuesday leading up to homecoming week debating the elements of the assembly. Overall, the event was very successful as Northview students found it enjoyable, and it excited the hearts of many students who look forward to this tradition each year.

Junior class president Colin Yanik played a huge role in this week as a whole and helped recruit members for the homecoming assembly games in which the students participated. Yanik believes the assembly is an important event for everyone in school to attend and appreciates the vibe of the week as a whole.

“I really like the week leading up to it, just because I’m big on school spirit and participating and things like that, I think it’s fun and people should do it. And I feel like the assembly is the first kind of thing that brings the whole school together,” Yanik said.

Yanik undoubtedly was a key player in the assembly, but couldn’t have been done without help from Haveman.

“It was just nice having her because she organizes things and gets everything together and sets up the meeting the day of where everybody went over the games and stuff, and just her sending out the email to kids just to let them know, like, ‘hey, you’re in the assembly stuff,” Yanik said.

Summer Swanzy is the class of 2026 senior class president. In simple terms, her experience with the homecoming assembly was extremely busy. She was not only a right hand man, assisting Haveman with all of the games, but also a part of the homecoming court dance and a varsity dance team routine. Swanzy too appreciates the guidance of Haveman.

“Mrs. Haveman helped organize the event. She is amazing at everything she does. She helped by providing instructions on everything I needed to do for the assembly, and she also helped me through the stressful time of the assembly because I was doing so much in it. And she kind of guided me,” Swanzy said.

The assembly is rooted in school pride. For years, it has been the basis of homecoming week. Creating a good show is one of Swanzy’s top priorities.

“The Homecoming assembly is important to me because it brings the Northview community together with different events that we have going on and it shows our school spirit,” Swanzy said.

Abby Amos was the third key player in the homecoming assembly. She helped with many games along with performing for the high school cheer team. Amos’ experience with helping out with the games proved to be quite enjoyable and stressful simultaneously.

“I did the cheer routine and then I helped out with the towel race and I collected the points for Hungry Hippo. That was the hardest part because they [the students] kept yelling at me and they just kept throwing things towards my direction,” Amos said.

Amos believes events like homecoming are rare chance for the school to come together due to the positive and safe environment provided.

“The homecoming assembly is important to me because it really shows school spirit and brings the school together, because there’s not a whole lot of events where like the entire school is there,” Amos said.

Overall, student council made homecoming Friday a magical and pep-filled day for every single student and ensured we all came together as a community.
