Around the globe different symbols and words vary in denotative and connotative meanings, but, as mentioned during the assembly, one of the most well known symbols is that of the Red Cross. Whether it is a fire, a natural disaster or a medical emergency, people are able to depend the Red Cross to help get them get back on their feet.
For over a century, the American Red Cross has depended solely on volunteers and donations. With 90% of their workforce being volunteers, the organization continues to grow and adapt to the needs of people facing crises around the globe.
The efforts made by the Red Cross inspired the members of the National Honor Society to support this organization throughout Fling Week.
At the first NHS meeting each year, the members vote on which organizations to work with throughout the year, Chris Atchison, NHS adviser said.
“Due to all the [natural] disasters this past year, the NHS members voted on the Red Cross to help support their relief efforts,” Atchison said.
Several fundraisers took place during the week of February 5, including a change war among grade levels, flower grams, passing change buckets around at the basketball games and the mandex volleyball game.
All of the events were ways to bring the school together in support of a worthy cause.
“I hope our money can go to a family that has lost their home, or help funding towards getting the power back and so much more,” senior NHS member Georgia Wiseman said.
There was no set goal of how much money the National Honor Society hoped to raise, but after a productive week, the school raised a total of $1800.
The money isn’t going to sit in a bank account, it will go towards rebuilding the lives of the families and individuals who were affected by natural disasters or unexpected and unfortunate events.
