Many people have the dream of competing in the Olympics. On April 2nd, 2025, students have the opportunity to compete in the high school’s very own Wildcat Olympics.
The Wildcat Olympics have been going on for over ten years, raising money for a variety of things. A big portion of the funds raised goes to the senior scholarship for the National Honor Society (NHS). The money raised also covers the operating costs of NHS, which includes things like paper bags for Kids Food Basket, medals for the Wildcat Olympics and rubber ducks for the rubber duck fundraiser. NHS also has many professional development opportunities for its members including a conference that is $250 per person. Money raised can support sending students to these conferences. To compete in the Wildcat Olympics it is a $5 dollar admission fee per event. The events range from basketball to competitive hotdog eating. Students can sign up to compete in the Wildcat Olympics during A or B lunch at the table next to the special education hallway. Events will take place throughout the school day Wednesday, April 2.
Besides raising money for NHS, the Wildcat Olympics is a beneficial and thrilling experience for many. English teacher and lead of the Wildcat Olympics Janelle Miles, can see the increase in productivity and the boost in engagement especially so close to vacation.
“I think that when you have a community, a school community that supports the shot of liveliness and joy in the school space, it really increases the grind,” Miles said.
Miles notes that even when students are in stressful situations at school, fun events like the Wildcat Olympics can take some of the edge off.
“Sometimes your heart rate is up a little when you are walking into a classroom where you have a test, or you have a high pressure research situation, or you are asked to do a higher order thinking. This can be a lot of pressure,” Miles said. “So I think when we do something fun and we can bring everyone together, like the Wildcat Olympics, I think that really bolsters the idea that school is a place to build emotional intelligence and social intelligence just as much as it is a place to learn academics.”
