The Black Student Union (BSU) school organization is where everyone’s voices are heard. Black Student Union comes together with the strength to express their identity, their belonging, and unity as not only black students but people of different races and cultures to lead as one.

BSU at Northview High school is a student-led organization that advocates for equity, diversity, culture and a way to make everyone feel seen. BSU was established in 2025 and has weekly meetings at 8:00 am every Wednesday. All students who attend Northview High school are welcome no matter the color of their skin. BSU is a safe space for all students to feel encouraged and confident to express who they are and to amplify everyone’s voices.

BSU embraces all cultures and backgrounds with many diverse perspectives and adds positivity and empowerment into the community. This is a group where everyone’s voices are heard, empathy is being expressed, education of diverse cultures is being taught, and everyone is being seen as a person, not just by the color of their skin. If you’re seeking a group that promotes personal growth then BSU is a place  for you, as it only strengthens individuals, and offers a sense of belonging within our school community.

Anna Reynolds, an English and History teacher at Northview Highschool, is a facilitator for BSU and BSU also works within WAVE, where together they work to come up with more potentially planned activities in the future like food drives, Juneteenth festivals, soul food celebrations and more.

“This is a student-led organization. My role is to facilitate or provide space for it and advise as needed, but working with WAVE (welcoming, accepting and valuing everyone) I think there’s a lot of opportunities that kids can get to and learn/celebrate different cultures and identities,” Reynolds said.

Senior Keiarrah Reid, creator/ and sponsor of BSU at Northview High School, believes in the importance of experiencing different cultures and perspectives in order to truly thrive in life.

“The world is diverse so we all have to be around people who aren’t exactly like us. So learning to celebrate differences and maximize the benefits of all our differences and all of our perspectives is how we make the world a better place. So I think BSU is a big step in making the world a better place and making Northview Students more ready for the world,” Reid said.

Senior Emmanuel Self, a member of the BSU feels strongly about this group not only being for African American people, but for everyone the club helps members express and reflect upon human dignity within one another as a community.

“It’s a learning point for people who are learning how to be respectful to friends who are people of color. And learn certain jokes on what not to say or do and what’s not morally right, which I feel personally you shouldn’t need a class to teach you what’s morally right on something from a racial standpoint but unfortunately we’ve gotten to that point where we need to be there,”Self said.

Black Student Union is a group every school needs as it empowers students to express and to share who they really are outside of just their skin color. Reid and Reynolds have made it possible to highlight the parts of our lives many students might keep to themselves. As this group has more of a majority of seniors,  BSU welcomes all grade levels to come and join us to make a difference in their community and to pass on this amazing organization to younger grade levels to continue making a legacy within Northview High school.
