Defeat! The Lion’s season is over! Commanders 45, Lions 31. Just like that, a whole year of preparation and training, hopes and dreams, and opportunities to make history went up in flames.

On January 18th, many fans were disappointed by the Detroit Lions due to the tragic end of their season. They had the best regular season in the Detroit Lion history  until their loss to the Washington Commanders, finishing their season with a total of 15 wins and 2 losses.

The loss to the Commanders came as a shock to many, as the Lions were forecasted to be serious Super Bowl contenders. Fans had high expectations especially after such a dominant regular season. The Lions were the NFC champions, the top ranked team in the NFL, and they secured their playoff game at Ford Field, their home stadium. The energy around the team was at an all-time high, and Detroit supporters truly believed that this would be the first season that the Lions make it to the superbowl.  It seemed all stars finally aligned for them. However, their hopes were crushed in a heartbreaking defeat that left many questioning what went wrong.

Junior Kayellyn Sisk follows in her family’s footsteps and has been a Lions fan for almost her whole life.

“We have always been pretty big Lions fans and we’ve been to a few games but it just seems like every year they disappoint their fans,” Sisk said.

Social media exploded with reactions from frustrated fans, with many expressing their disappointment and disbelief. The loss was especially tough for longtime supporters who have stuck with the team through years of struggles. The Detroit Free Press(DFP), a Detroit news website, has been writing about The Lions since the team’s beginning.

“The Lions had a great season, but they completely fell apart when it mattered the most. It’s the same story every year,” John Reynolds from the DFP said.

Others pointed at coaching decisions and missed opportunities as key reasons for the loss. Many believed that the Lions had the talent to go all the way, but they just couldn’t execute under pressure.

“We were pretty impressed with how they did this year but disappointed [because]they didn’t win their last game,” Sisk said.

Many fans thought that this was the year that the lions break their losing streak and make it to the finals.

“I really thought this was the year we’d finally see the Lions in the Super Bowl. It hurts to get so close and still fall short,” Emily Carter from the DFP said.

Despite the disappointment, some fans are trying to stay optimistic about the future. The Lions have built a strong foundation, and with talented players returning next season, there is hope that they can bounce back stronger. Despite the talent remaining, the team did lose their offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears, and their defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets.  Both are now head coaches of competing franchises.  Many still have faith and believe that Lions head coach Dan Campbell is more than capable of bringing home a Superbowl victory in the near future.
