Thinking CAP

Senior students make attempts to build paper towers in their first CAP class. CAP classes will be held every other Wednesday.

At the beginning of the second semester, as students looked to see their modified schedules, they noticed an additional hour added. Yet, the arrival of an eighth hour, called “CAP,” to student’s schedules has been a long time coming.

“The goal is that we know by the time you graduate what your next step is, no matter what that is,” CAP coordinator and English teacher Shelli Tabor said. “You might not know exactly what it’s going to be, but you at least have a pathway.”

CAP stands for Career, Aware, Prepare and was created with the goal to bring together students and teachers in a welcoming and open environment while educating students on future possibilities. Working for these goals will happen during a hour long class that are scheduled to take place every other Wednesday between second and third hour.

“The hope is that you’re going to connect with [your CAP teacher] freshman or sophomore year. That person will be a sounding board for opportunities and possibilities,” Tabor said.

The overall goal that CAP hopes to achieve is to adequately prepare students for the future.

“Over the course of a students’ time at Northview, we hope that they will begin to see a career pathway that will be well-suited to both their strengths, interests and goals,” CAP coordinator and science teacher Derek Smith said.
