Espresso or depresso: should Northview sell coffee?

Between early mornings, late-night studying, and back-to-back classes, Northview students are running on fumes. It’s time we ran on coffee instead.

When students come to school in the morning they are dragging. Trying to keep eyes open is a struggle. Some students fail, and end up in a morning snooze instead of engaging in class. The early morning hits everyone hard, so whether you are studying, working or at a practice, early wake ups don’t help anyone. Northview should sell coffee, in either vending machines or lunch lines. A boost of caffeine can boost confidence.

Northview should start selling coffee because it would be convenient for students who need a quick boost of energy during the day. Many students come to school tired, and coffee would help students focus on school work. An easy grab-and-go in the mornings could benefit the staff as well. Coffee is already popular among teenagers so the profit the school would make could be put towards things students would appreciate such as  better lunches and field trips.

Many students agree the lack of caffeinated beverages at the high school is an issue. Sophomore Delaney Middleton is passionate about the topic.

“It would definitely help me be more energized and it would help me focus more because then I’d be more aware of my surroundings and I would know straight away what to do, especially in my morning classes,” Middleton said.

It’s hard to keep eyes open and minds focused by 7:30am. Caffeine in the morning helps you focus and perform more diligent work.

“I’d say I’m definitely night owl, but with the caffeine, I think it helps me become more active in the morning,” Middleton said.

The coffee talk at Northview isn’t cooling off any time soon, rather it’s heating up. Junior Ginger Florida knows the balancing act of money versus coffee.

“I’d say between 6 and 7 dollars for a cup of coffee,” Florida said. “Probably at least twice a week, if not more.”

With busy school days lead straight to work or sport practices, waking up before the sun is up each morning gets quite tiring. A morning coffee wake up would be an asset for tired worn down students.

“Because I think we often get home, we have school and then we have to go to practice and then we get homework and then we go to bed and we do it all over again. So having something that can kind of keep us focused during the school day can help the grades stay up and the ability to keep on doing all those things available,” Florida said.

Northview needs to start making an effort to help motivate our students. Coffee is a good way to start. Supplying our lunch lines/vending machines will give students the chance to gain that little bit of energy for the day ahead.
