The varsity ski team starts the year in cold weather conditions and plenty of snow. They have new hopes and goals for the upcoming season.
The ski team was established in 2010 by former Northview staff member Jon Duley. What started as a brand-new team fifteen years ago, has become a successful and hard-working powerhouse. Nowadays, the ski season starts mid-November, and they weight train after school Monday through Thursday until 4 pm. When Cannonsburg opened on December 13th, the team began their practices which are held Mondays through Thursdays. After they had enough time to condition and practice, their race season began on January 7th and competitions continue every Tuesday until late February.
The ski team has two coaches, Challice Dixon and head coach David Dixon. David has been coaching since the 2016-2017 ski season. The married couple has a son named Austin Dixon who was on the ski team, and when he graduated, they decided to take over as the coaches. They also have a daughter named Ariana Dixon who skied on the ski team.
David and Challice are aiming towards the State finals this year, and they hope every racer will have a wonderful experience on the ski team.
“Our goals are for each team member to improve throughout the season,” David said. “We hope our team members not only improve throughout the season but gain a love of ski racing and have a wonderful experience on the ski team.”
Senior skier Drake Selleck prepared for pre-season by playing football. Selleck has many wishes and goals for his final season as a high school skier. You can qualify for state by placing in the top ten at the regionals meet.
“I want to better my times and go harder this season,” Selleck said. “ I also hope a few of us, including myself, get to state this season.”
Another skier getting ready for ski before the snow flies is senior Sophia Tyler. She is optimistic about her final high school season.
“Mentally and physically I feel good,” Tyler said. “ We have been doing pre-season workouts for a couple of months which have been going well.”
Be a great wildcat and support the Cannonsburg ski team every Tuesday while drinking hot cocoa and enjoying the snowy weather.
