As the air outside gets colder and the snow starts to fall, winter sports teams are ramping up for their upcoming seasons. Many practices and tryouts are already underway, and hockey is no exception.
The hockey team has been preparing long and hard for the upcoming season. They practiced three days a week during the summer, which included time on the ice, weightlifting and team bonding exercises.
The difficult practices and workouts are all in hopes for a successful season. Several changes to the team have occurred including the placement of a new head coach, Travis Nichol.
“I’ve been coaching hockey for 11 years, but this is my first year with Northview and my first year as head coach,” Nichol said.
According to Nichol, many returning players are expected to be on the team this year. The varsity players range from all grade levels and include students from three different schools: Northview, Oakridge and Comstock Park.
Unlike other teams whose players have the advantage of attending school together, the hockey players have had to work extra hard in order to unite as a team.
“I think they are really starting to come together more as a family and as a close group, which should translate into more success on the ice,” Nichol said.
The hockey team’s next game of the season is Wednesday, December 4 at 8:00 P.M. at Griff’s Ice House.
