We all know the dreadful feeling of having to get through another class before you can go home. The solution to this issue is a class filled with laughter.
Algebra and geometry teacher Greg Madendorp is a Grand Valley State University (GVSU) graduate. He earned his degree in Mathematics and began his teaching journey. Madendorp became a substitute teacher and has subbed for many schools in Grand Rapids, including Forest Hills and Rockford. In October of 2025, Madendorp was presented with an opportunity to long-term sub for Northview math teacher Abigail Krantz due to maternity leave. In filling for Krantz, Madendorp’s goal was to get experience as a long-term substitute teacher to be able to take his next step into full-time teaching again.
Freshman Melanie deLongpre noticed how learning and fun in the classroom would continue even when the official leader is absent.

“It was a change from Krantz to Madendorp because of how fun, yet educational, it was, to be in that classroom with all of my peers,” deLonpre said.
During the time Madendorp substituted at the high school, he taught pre-calculus and algebra 1. It was through these classes he was able to form strong student-teacher connections. Junior Jaxson Buskard is one of the many students forming a great student-teacher bond with Madendorp.
“I would say we have a pretty tight, student-teacher connection, as he helps me out with work, and he basically helps me and tells me to get back to work when I get off track,” Buskard said.

Algebra and Geometry teacher Susan Brush was one of Madendorp’s coworkers who helped him during his time here. Brush and Madendorp worked together to form worksheets and math packets for students to strengthen their math skills.
“He’s been right on top of everything. He knows what he’s doing, and he’s done a good job,” Brush said.
Madendorp liked the stability of going back into a classroom and being our long-term substitute teacher.
“I personally have enjoyed being that stability for the students,” Madendorp said.
Madendorp’s time at our school wasn’t permanent, but he sure made a good impact on all of us. He’s left here and taken a teaching job at Grand River Preparatory High School, where he is enjoying his time as a full-time teacher
