A guide to cheap jewelry

As the social media site Tik Tok has exploded in popularity, so have trends started by its users. Fashion trends have taken the front seat in style for young people. Namely, affordable jewelry.

Although it can be used as an accent piece to enhance any outfit, cheap jewelry tends to break easily and tarnish. Not all budget friendly accessories have this effect, however.

Junior Anna Ohlman, a self-proclaimed lover of cheap jewelry, admitted that it does in fact leave a mark.

“Some cheap rings will turn your finger green if they get wet and the silver or gold will wear off and leave a line,” she said. “It happens pretty easily, if you wash your hands a couple of times, the ring will start to turn your skin green.”

Northview students who partake in this trend find their jewelry from various vendors, such as Forever 21 and H&M, at local malls, as well as fast fashion websites such as SHEIN and ROMWE. Although these sites are convenient and budget friendly, over time, the repeated purchasing of mass amounts of jewelry to fill the gaps of the easily broken pieces will add up.

Luckily for bling lovers, there are alternatives that won’t break the bank or turn you into the Grinch. Jewelry made out of materials such as stainless steel, sterling silver, and platinum, do not tarnish at all or tarnish much  slower.

In general, jewelry from websites that focus on higher quality coatings and handmade items is easier to maintain. No matter the source, jewelry always adds a nice touch. Avid buyers may want to consider these alternative sources.

Websites such as Bohomoon, Adinas, Ellie Vail, and even Etsy, offer these choices. Focusing on pieces that are waterproof, tarnish resistant, colorful, or demure. There is something for everyone.
