Day in the life: Hope Flowers

Hope Flowers runs to score on the home Wildcat stadium against Mona Shores high school.

Junior Hope Flowers is a verified early bird.

Flowers kicks off her morning, bright and early, around 5a.m and heads out the door just in time to catch the morning bus for Kent County Technical Center (KCTC.)

Flowers is enrolled in Health Career Foundations, with her first session running from 6:55 to 9:10. The session goes into depth in anatomy and physiology, while learning patient care skills and exploring a variety careers in healthcare.

After KCTC wraps up, Flowers arrives back at school in the middle of second hour. She then grabs breakfast and changes out of her scrubs before heading to third hour, an online course based on Advanced Algebra II.

Flowers then heads to her fourth hour, Advanced Placement (AP) Literature and Composition and following is lunch. Her school day ends with Accelerated Physics and AP Government.

The thing Flowers looks forward to most each day is AP Government.

“I feel like I can be myself because [my classmates] are all comfortable with each other,” Flowers said. “We have so much fun even though it’s a difficult class.”

Classmates even recognize the environment Flowers brings to AP Government.

“She’s one of the sweetest people I know and she has such a pure soul,” Junior Mckinley Hanninen said. “She’s always so positive and is extremely hard working”

When the dismissal bell rings, Flowers heads to the choir room for musical rehearsal, which ends around 5:30pm

“What I do after [rehearsal] depends on which day it is but I usually stay later to work out and practice a little lacrosse,” Flowers said. “Other days I walk back home and work on homework before I go back for dance practice [until] 9p.m.”

After the day comes to an end, Flowers heads home.

“Fortunately, my mom always has dinner ready for me when I get home no matter the time, which I appreciate,” Flowers said.

Balancing extracurriculars, AP classes and KCTC gives students a lot of responsibility. Flowers finds ways to stay organized with her time and her work load.

“I try to manage my time as best as possible,” Flowers said. “I recently started a bullet journal to organize and keep track of all the events and homework I need to finish that day.”

Despite the busy schedule, Flowers makes time for herself, her family and a healthy mindset.

“I take breaks throughout the day and spend time with my family so I don’t get too overwhelmed,” Flowers said. “There are many times throughout the week where I get stressed and question if it’s worth all the anxiety, but I remind myself what all my hard work is for and to chase my dreams.
