Friendship feature: Meegan

Best friends are not easy to come by and don’t always stick around, but for Seniors Maddie Davis and Keegan Brown, their friendship is like no other. This pair met while at Highlands and have continued to be close friends since.

However, this friendship extends beyond the classroom. Davis and Brown both participate in the dance team, drama club, WAVE (Welcoming, Accepting, and Valuing everyone), SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Student Council, NHS (National Honor Society), varsity voices, and are peer listeners. In addition, they both class presidents.

“I like inspiring everyone and just being a leader for everybody and making everybody’s day, it’s fun to help everyone,” Brown said.

Their lively schedules fail to lower their moods as they find joy within the communities they participate in. The theater department is especially loved by the two, and they are no strangers to the stage. Davis performed in her first school production in fifth grade at Highlands, while Brown had a bit of a late start in seventh grade at Crossroads. One of their many performances was this fall, they performed together in this year’s most recent NHS theater production, Into the Woods.

“It’s really nice and I mean I love what I do, I love to sing, dance, act, it’s all really fun. Then putting on a show, I love having an audience, seeing the applause and everyone after my show,” Brown said.

When the stage lights are off, this duo has a lot of busy work to accomplish. Being involved in so many extracurriculars, it consumes a lot of their schedule. From dance team practices to student council meetings, these two don’t have much time to spare. The pair organizes and leads a lot of the activities that the student body gets to enjoy. They work behind the scenes at some of the major school events.

“We’re in charge of getting themes out for spirit week [and the planning, organizing, and decorating of dances,]” Brown said.

This is only a few of the many tasks of being a class president. The agreement of an entire student body is not easy to come by, and there will always be backlash in the process. Davis strives to make choices that will accommodate everyone’s needs, from spirit week themes to dance decorations. The two work really hard to produce something that can appeal to all the students, although this does come at a price sometimes. Problems may occur when trying to make a decision that hundreds of students will agree on… and hundreds of students won’t. so Davis offers this piece of advice.

“Make it fun and remember that everything that you may want, not everyone else is going to want,” Davis said.

Davis and Brown do not have any regrets about being as involved in the school as they are. They encourage others to participate as well, and assure that it isn’t a waste of time. Their college applications will be stunning, but these two don’t do it for the golden star, they do it because they both love the satisfaction of having their hard work pay off, as well as the ability to lead and make a difference.

“Just [participate in extracurriculars], there’s no regrets, especially with clubs and smaller stuff like that,” Davis said. “What’s the worst thing that can happen?”

The two aim to be leaders for everyone and hope to have set a good example for the future classes to follow.

“I would say [to underclassmen] enjoy it, I mean the time really does go fast, but also work hard at the same time, it’s good to keep up your grades and participate in everything you can because you’ll regret it if you don’t,” Brown said

Many people have questioned if these friends are just that. Davis and Brown are open about their friendship and how much they both care for each other, but when it comes to the topic of dating, the two choose to keep that answer to themselves.

“The world may never know, we’ll leave it up to your interpretation,” Davis said.
