Small business spotlight: Bostwick Bakery

Plainfield has several chain bakeries and coffee shops such as Biggby or Tim Horton’s. But amidst those chain stores is a small bakery filled with many baked goods and friendly employees.

Their display includes an array of many baked goods including donuts, a popular favorite, which are made throughout the day.

“My favorite part of my job is physically making the donuts. It’s such a long process but at the same time it’s so time-sensitive that it’s fun to see from start to finish,” co-owner Kari Koster said.

While the bakery is known for its baked goods, they also serve lunch. Koster encourages students to come pick up or eat lunch at their location. Bostwick Bakery offers 10% off to all Northview students and faculty with a school ID.

“I think Northview kids should be coming to get lunch. You can send in a mobile order and have it ready to go,” Koster said.

Koster sees many different people walking in and out of her bakery every day. Because of this, she doesn’t see the same type of people all day.

“It’s pretty vast. During the school year, we get a lot of Northview students and staff,  but I don’t think we have a definite demographic,” Koster said.

Bostwick’s Plainfield bakery isn’t their only location, the original Bostwick Bakery in Rockford has been open for over 60 years. Koster and her business partner bought the two locations, plus two more that closed a year and a half ago, from her business partner’s dad.

Koster has plans for the future of her small business that isn’t focusing on their popular favorite.

“I would like to open something a little bit different in that instead of featuring [only] donuts, it [features] other baked goods [instead],” Koster said.

With a hopeful future and two successful bakeries, Koster is proud of how far they’ve come.

“In the last year we have worked really hard to bring quality products while also constantly looking for opportunities to grow,” Koster said.
