How and why to learn a new language

Most schools require at least two years of a foreign language class in high school, but anyone of all ages can learn a new language outside of a classroom. Living in the age of the internet makes it even easier, with online translators and apps at our disposal. It’s possible to learn a language without ever getting up from the couch.

Yet misconceptions about learning one abound. Many give up before they even begin because they think they need expensive textbooks or friends who speak the language. But the only thing really needed to learn a language is motivation. Be determined to learn and the rest will follow.

The benefits of doing so are numerous. According to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, benefits of learning a language include better career opportunities and improved memory and problem solving skills. Those who learn a language tend to do better on tests and achieve more in academics than those who don’t. Knowing more than one language may also give them an advantage when it comes to getting hired.

Whether learning a new language by yourself or in a class, here are some tips to guide the learning process.
