Dancing with the Wildcats

Some members of the 2021 dance team pose for a picture at practice. The teams first performance is December 10.

The newest team to our school might not be something one would expect. Started by junior class president Emily Camp, the Northview dance team has become more than just an idea.

Having a goal of at least 10 participants, Camp was surprised with an outcome of 15 excited dancers.

“A dance team is something that sounded really cool to me and I knew others who would genuinely enjoy it as well,” Camp said. “Everyone’s the founder [of the team] because I feel like we’re all part of something that’s just starting.”

The process of making the team was more simple than one would think. Camp brought the idea to Athletic Director Pat Marsman and got the ok. From there, she created a Google Form and posted it on social media, where many students responded. Following the Google Form, interested participants were expected to show up to the first practice in order to continue with the team.

“People filled it out and we had our first practice, things went really well. It’s just gotten better ever since,” Camp said.

The team doesn’t have a coach, it’s student led. They are choreographed by senior teammate Neala Jacobson-Dicks. A remix of ‘Finesse’ by Cardi B and Bruno Mars is the first song the team is currently practicing.

“I’ve always wanted [Northview] to have a dance team so I’m really happy that there is one,” Jacobson-Dicks said. “It’s a place where people who may not have a winter sport can join and have fun.”

As of now, the team won’t be competing against others but they will perform in front of huge crowds this winter. At halftime of Friday night basketball games, that’s when the team will show off their moves.

The team is looking forward to the excitement, starting on December 10th when the boys take on Wyoming for their season opener. As for the future of the team, their goal next year is to become an official coach-led team with the goal of competing in future competitions beside surrounding schools.

“We have the energy to do it, we have the people to do it. Instead of halftime shows with little kids running around shooting basketballs,” Camp said. “I feel like it would be a good performance and I feel as if the student section will be a great pump up for us.”
