On November 17 the Northview community encountered a devastating loss, the death of student and classmate Cameron Devries.

The public was made aware of the news on Saturday, November 18 when interim superintendent Dr. Christina Hinds  made the following announcement via email sent to parents and staff:

“Dear Northview families, it is with a heavy heart that I write to you today to share some deeply sad news. We have recently learned of the unexpected death of one of our high school students, a junior Cameron Devries. This loss is a shock to our school community, and our deepest sympathies are with the student’s family during this unimaginably difficult time.

We understand that this news may be profoundly distressing for many of our students and teachers. In recognition of the impact this may have, we will have counselors available at the schools on Monday and Tuesday this week. These trained professionals will offer support and guidance to both students and staff as we navigate through this challenging period.

In times of tragedy, the strength of our school community is more important than ever. We must come together to support one another, offering kindness, understanding, and compassion. Please encourage your child to express their feelings and seek support if they are struggling with this loss.

Funeral arrangements are not yet finalized. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, the building administration, and/or your child’s teacher(s) if you have any questions or need further assistance. Sincerely, Dr. Christina Hinds Interim Superintendent.”

Devries will be missed dearly by his family and friends. In his honor, his family will hold a candle-lighting ceremony on Friday, November 24 in the high school parking lot. They ask for those attending to arrive at 6:30 PM and to bring their own candles to light. The ceremony will commence at 7:30 PM.

In response to the grief and distress students may be experiencing, the high school will be offering support to those devastated by the loss. Students seeking support or guidance, please do not hesitate to reach out to a trusted source, a staff member or stop by the counseling office to discuss the matter with a counselor.

As the Devries family navigates through this tough time, they are requesting privacy. If more information or a public statement is presented, The Roar will continue to try our best to keep the community updated. As for now, please keep speculation to a minimum.
