In lieu of the holiday season, the Northview National Honor Society (NHS) is doing their part to spread the holiday cheer. NHS and the Michigan Veterans Home of Grand Rapids have partnered together in an Adopt-A-Veteran service project to collect donations for our veterans.

“Usually we do the adopt a soldier project every year where we get to send Christmas presents overseas to soldiers, but this year it’s too expensive with shipping costs and Covid so we’re trying to keep it more local and just do it with our veterans that stay here in Grand Rapids at the veterans home,” Victoria Scovel, Secretary of National Honor Society, said.

The service project is working to provide veterans with donations (such as food, clothing and personal care items) tailored to their preference to provide a holiday gift.

Donations for the veterans are being collected in both the Guidance Office and the front office in labeled bins. Lists with wanted donations are posted around the school, in the front office, and can be found on the Michigan Veterans Home of Grand Rapids website as well as their Amazon Wish List

The final day to donate items will be Thursday, December 16 and donations will be dropped off the following day to the veterans.

“We are hoping to get as many items that are on the donation list as possible by the time winter break ends. We really want to help the veterans and get them as much as we can,” Scovel said.
