Northview responds to Parkland shooting by Chance Owens

February 14th is supposed to be a day of love. But tragically for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that day was filled with terror as many students hid for their lives.

Nikolas Cruz, a 19 year old man, allegedly opened fired on the Douglas High students, killing 17 people. He created a living nightmare that the nation will never forget.

As a high school student in America, I see these graphic images and have one recurring thought: will my student body be safe today?

In today’s society we need to make some serious changes. Mental illness is a trending topic among high school teens, and we need to recognize the signs. We should have therapy sessions in our high schools for troubled teens.

Cruz was a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and was expelled in 2017 for getting into trouble several times. Many students who were interviewed described Cruz as a troubled teen, who had guns.

Yet no one followed up on the warning signs.

No 19-year-old should have access to an assault rifle. If as an American you want to express your 2nd amendment right to purchase a handgun to protect yourself and your loved ones, feel free to do so. But I don’t see the point of giving the access to teenagers to purchase an AR-15.

We’ve had 18 school shootings in 2018 already. If we don’t change something, we will continue to have tragedies on should-be-happy days.
