Turning on the radio, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas” starts immediately blasting in the car. I look down at my phone to look at the date and low and behold, the date November 1 is displayed in black letters.
I sigh realizing it’s back to the time of the year where people get into the Christmas spirit too early.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Scrooge, but starting Christmas festivities before December 1st feels wrong to me.
All other holidays seem to have their own designated month. October has Halloween, July has Independence Day and November has Thanksgiving. So if we are following this same pattern, Christmas therefore belongs to December.
For those of us who follow the one month of Christmas festivities, the spirit doesn’t burn out. 25 days is way more than enough time to do all of the activities, to watch all the movies and to listen to all of the music.
There is no need for it to be dragged out for two months.
According to a poll done by Bustle.com in 2017, only 26% of people think that November 1 is an “optimal time to start listening to the music appropriate to Yuletide.”
Music may be a lot of people’s first step into the Christmas spirit but there are 74% of people who believe that right after Halloween isn’t the right time. So doing Christmas festivities beyond that are probably not on people’s minds.
Christmas movies follow suit in being an early riser like Christmas music. Hallmark movies are a staple in my household during the holiday season but it feels like they start earlier and earlier every year. This year, they even started before Halloween.
Every single movie has the same plotline with the people who have the same personalities so having to watch those for two and a half months gets repetitive. But 25 days of them is a little more manageable.
I know that, especially in Michigan, the Christmas spirit can start for some after the first snow of the year which can make it seem like the start of the holiday season even if it happens before December even starts. But oftentimes enough, if the first snow happens between Halloween and December 1, the snow doesn’t stick around long.
The people who got excited too early are now left with the disappointment of their green grass and Christmas lights clashing.
So for those of you who are counting down until December 1, don’t worry, we only have six days left until it truly is the holiday season.
