On January 19, the varsity competitive cheer team hosted an eight-team invitational, and the Wildcats maintained their own on their home turf, breaking records in the process.

Throughout the three rounds, the girls managed to rack up a total of 705.76 points, the highest score the competitive cheer team has ever earned in the history of the program, and put them in second place, behind Spring Lake Varsity.

Varsity head coach Nikki VanTimmermen is extremely proud of the girls for breaking the record.

“Our recent practices have been spent really digging in and working on cleaning up their motions and skills,” VanTimmermen said. “I am so glad that the judges have noticed the changes, and they were rewarded with scores that reflected it. Every season, we put goals out there to hit new high scores, and watching the girls realize they did that was incredible.”

During the first round, which is all about visuals and movements such as jumps, the girls were off to an impressive start with a 221.9 start. The second round, which is more centered on tumbling but is overall similar to round one, was a bit of a dip in the girls’ points total. They received 196.96 points for the round, but the girls recovered in round three. In the third and final round, which revolves around stunting and more tumbling, the girls brought home a total of 286.9 points.

Senior Molly Scarbnick is thrilled that the team broke a record.

“If you would’ve told me my freshman year what we would achieve now I wouldn’t believe you,” Scarbnick said. “The group of girls we have this year is incredible and I have no doubt we can break more records.”

After their big success at this invitational, the girls are ready to beat the competition at their next one.

“We have one month of our season to go, and I’m confident it will be the best cheer Northview has ever seen,” VanTimmermen said.

The team’s next competition is on Saturday, January 28 at Byron Center.

Senior Mia Schutter believes that the team can win again next competition.

“It is another conference competition and there are some teams who are out there to beat us, but I believe that if we pull through again and give it all we got, we can do amazing yet again,” Schutter said.
