Girls swim and dive: State Championships recap

The girls varsity swim and dive team competed at the MHSAA Division 2 State Championships November 22 and 23 at Oakland University. Northview sent a team composed of seniors Livia Dietrichson, Cydney Eastman, Sarah Pataniczek and Emma Van Dyke as well as sophomores Hasten Horling, Juliette Kaltenberg, Lauren Murphy, Peyton Oade, Krysta Rance and Maddie Tay.

The girls swim and dive state team line up behind the spirit rock with Aquatic Center Director Suann Foust. The girls went to state championships after practicing for it since August.

The meet began with the 200 Yard Medley Relay. This is a relay composed of a backstroker, breaststroker, butterflyer and a freestyler. Northview’s team of Dietrichson, Horling, Tay and Eastman took 11th during preliminaries (prelims) with a time of 1:52.95. They finished in 14th place on the day of finals with a time of 1:53.96.

Kaltenberg took 16th place for the 1 Meter Diving event, scoring a total of 310.85. Kaltenberg is now the tenth best diver in Northview history.

The 100 Yard Freestyle followed diving with both Eastman and Dietrichson competing. In prelims, Dietrichson and Eastman placed 12th and 13th respectively with times of 53.72 and 53.74. The next day, Eastman pulled ahead and ended in 9th place with a time of 53.56 while Dietrichson secured 13th with a time of 53.85. These times moved Eastman and Dietrichson up to 3rd and 4th fastest 100 Freestyle times in Northview history.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Dietrichson, Eastman, Horling and Tay took 6th place on both days with a time of 1:39.89 the first day and 1:39.56 the second. With this time, the relay team achieved All State Honors and narrowly missed breaking the school record of 1:38.56.

Horling placed 14th in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.74 during prelims and a 1:09.54 during finals. This time moved her to third fastest breaststroker in Northview history.

Lastly, the Lady Wildcats brought home a 13th place in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay of Dietrichson, Eastman, Van Dyke and Horling. With a time of 3:41.37 at prelims and a time of 3:41.43 at finals, the Wildcats finished off their meet.

Overall, the girls took 15th at the meet out of 45 competing teams.
