High energy, big bragging rights, and no holding back. This year’s junior vs. senior powderpuff game lived up to the hype.
Powderpuff football is a game where the roles are reversed: football players take the track, and the girls take the field. Our varsity football team worked together to coach the girls based on the grade level they are in, while our cheerleaders taught the boys all kinds of stunts and chants. After two weeks of practicing, the game took place on Thursday September 24th, at 7:00pm. There was a three dollar admission fee for anyone who wanted to attend. Our high school students and wildcat parents showed up to support everyone and cheer the juniors and seniors on.

Senior Dylan Castro was a head coach for the senior girls. He did his best to teach them new skills and learn the plays but he also had fears because people were absent for practice often. At the same time, he was encouraging and kept a positive spirit.
“We were kind of scared before the game. We didn’t know how this was gonna go. The game might be really really good or really really bad and it turned out really great,” Castro said. “We only had probably 5 plays and it turned out. We wanted to keep it simple.”
The senior girls took a loss last year as juniors, so this year they wanted to go out with a bang. Students had been practicing really hard weeks before the game took place with long practices, big emotions and lots of excitement leading up to the game, no one had any idea of what the outcome could be.
“I felt energetic. All of the coaches were really excited to coach. We were trying to keep the energy up and get the girls going.“ said Castro.

Junior coach Arien Clark took a swing at being a head coach, coming up with good tactics. Clark made sure to incorporate everyone and the playing time they wanted, while also making sure everyone had fun on the field. He mentioned he would definitely plan to take on the role again if asked with the hopes of a better outcome for his team.
“I feel like next year I would do a lot better as a powderpuff coach after having my experience now and I feel a lot better to have a way more successful season next year and I don’t think I wanna do football coaching outside of that,” Clark said.
Taking the role of the wide receiver, junior Olivia Palmer played hard throughout the night and had a lot of playing time on the field. This was her first year playing in the powderpuff game. The experience was exhilarating and Palmer sees the effort our student coaches put into this game.
“It was really fun to be able to experience it with people in our grade and I think they did well teaching us how to play.” said Palmer.
While some students may or may not know what they are doing in the powderpuff game, being able to take on the experience and participate in the game has been some high schoolers biggest highlight of the year. The game is a fun thing for students to take on and if you have the chance you should definitely take it. Don’t let your nerves hold you back from a good time!
