The boys hockey team traveled to Dearborn for their holiday tournament this past weekend. After four years of coming up short of first place in the tournament, the team focused on changing that.

On Friday, their first game was against Legion High School. With some members of the Wildcats out of the game, others were asked to step up. Seniors Eli Neuman and Caden Obetts did just that in a 7-2 win to advance in the tournament.

“Although [Eli and Caden] didn’t record any points on the scoresheet, they played outstanding for us on the blue line,” head coach Travis Nichol said. “They were forced into a different role and they excelled in that role.”

Junior Brady Klekotka led the team offensively, dishing out three assists to teammates and scoring a goal himself.

With a solid performance on the ice from The Cats, they clinched a spot in the championship game the following day.

New Boston Huron would be their opponent and both teams were working towards a tournament win.

The Cats started right where they left off the previous night and never looked back, scoring nine goals in a blowout championship win. The final score was 9-1 giving the Wildcats the championship win and 1st place trophy.

“Klekotka stepped up scoring 1 goal and 2 assists, giving him an outstanding 7 point weekend. Senior Caden Obetts put the puck in the net twice and Senior Assistant Captain Kyle Pitchure scored 1 with 1 assist,” coach Nichol said.

It was a great team effort and win but the team is still focused on improving every day.

“We’ve been working hard at practice to get better and it showed in the championship,” Klekotka said
